Journey’s End (2014)

Journey’s End was inspired by my love of video games, and my desire to create soundtracks for a video game. In the absence of a video game soundtrack commission, I decided to come up with my own video game concept to make a soundtrack for. Maybe one day with enough free time and motivation, I’ll make a video game to go alongside the soundtrack, but for now I’ll have to make do with sharing the general concept.

Adrian is a young boy who faces his fears by leaving his home town and traversing through a forest, lake, caves, and a laboratory before finally making his way to the big city to face the final boss. I included cutscene themes for before each of the five main areas, and a main boss for each - envisioning an adventure through each stage, facing one fear at a time in a quest to become a hero. The soundtrack was very much inspired by tracks from Mother 3, Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World among others.

As well as producing the main soundtrack, I also used Famitracker to produce NES remixes of some stages which I thought would work well with the 8-bit style. Inspired by Outrun 2 and other Japanese games, I also produced arranged versions of some tracks, showing what they would sound like on later consoles with greater audio capabilities. In all there are 50 tracks in this mammoth gaming project, reflecting a range of sounds and styles.
