Wavelengths - Ghost Hall (2016)

The second Ghost Hall release, Wavelengths sought to unite several album concepts through its samples. Sticking with the obscure 7” vinyl samples, I picked up some audiobook style fairytales, and created a bank of samples around the themes of robots and AI - potentially replacing humans, or having a far more human experience than was currently possible. The final theme of the album was work/life balance - something touched upon both in fairy tales (Cinderella especially) and with automation of jobs by AI and robots.

The album follows a loose story of a robot meeting a human child, and wondering to itself what it truly means to be human and whether it could ever be capable of such a thing. As the tracks progress, questions are asked about the differences between robots and humans, and what it means to truly feel. Finally the question of humans outliving their bodies and uploading a "‘mind file’ to the internet to live on is addressed, though no real conclusions are presented.

This album featured a lot of jazz influences, especially in the Rhodes piano sound and some of the chords used. On the track ‘Alpha Build 1.0’ I featured a guest performer for the first time on one of my albums; Jack Rowland played an improvised keyboard solo and we would later work together on producing his piano and vocal albums. The cover art is a collage of 3 pictures taken in London around Picadilly Circus and Chinatown, representing the thoughts and confusion inside of the robot mind.

Enter Username - (Music Video)

A humanoid robot explores the big city, trying to make sense of the hustle and bustle. As we never see the robot’s face, it’s impossible to distinguish from a human and this raises the question of where we draw the line between human and humanoid.

Shutdown? - (Music Video)

The companion video to Enter Username, Shutdown? is shot from the humanoid robot’s point of view as they explore the city. There’s a sense of longing and wanting to stay longer, before shutting down.
