Be All You Can Be (2019)

The fifth and final Ghost Hall album; Be All You Can Be explores self improvement and the various reasons why you (and others) might want to improve. Using clips from 40s and 50s self improvement films to be shown in American classrooms of the time, we take a look at mental and physical wellbeing, preparedness, socialising and a more sinister twist in preparing young people to be all that they can be.

Protect and Survive (2018)

Using only samples from a 1970s public information film on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack on the United Kingdom, mixed with signature Ghost Hall beats, Protect and Survive is the fourth Ghost Hall release, creating a powerful sense of dread. Insular feelings from the inner refuge and questionable government advice remind us that the past day isn’t too dissimilar to what we’re used to in the present day.

The front cover makes use of miniature posters designed by Jonathan Wentworth, in a dolls house setting, similar to the miniature used on the cover of the previous album, Nine Dragons.

Nine Dragons (2017)

Inspired by the book City Of Darkness, and the Kowloon Walled City’s portrayal in Shenmue II, the third Ghost Hall album explores the back streets of the most densely populated area on Earth just before its demise in 1994. Starting off outside the city on Tung Tau Tsuen Road and moving inwards and upwards to the rooftops with planes flying overhead to Kai Tai Airport and birds kept as pets on the roof, Nine Dragons explores the darkness and life inside that darkness.

The cover of this album is a miniature recreation of an alleyway in the Kowloon Walled City, originally from a photograph in the book City of Darkness.

Wavelengths (2016)

Wavelengths is the second Ghost Hall release, exploring the topics of robots, fairytales and work/life balance. Seemingly in modern society more and more jobs are being computerised, and this should mean a better work/life balance for humans, but it seems as if we’re only ever working harder. With this in mind, we explore the journey of a robot who thinks they’re human, and struggles to make sense of the world.

The cover is a composite of three images shot in London on one evening.

Sonder (2015)

Sonder is where Ghost Hall first began; a sound experiment with ham radio clips, a He-man storybook vinyl, my mother’s voice, a murder documentary, an autopsy and a live hypnotism. We are taken through a drug trip of epic proportion without our main character ever leaving his seat. An exploration of what television can do to an open mind, Sonder paved the way for the Ghost Hall albums after it in terms of soundscape and scope.

The cover was taken on an Amstrad CPC 464
